BlazePod Reaction Time Training
BlazePod is a set of wireless light pods. They light up, the athlete reacts, and the system records how long it took. Simple hardware — the value is in what the coach makes the athlete do between the light and the response.
What we use it for
Measuring, not guessing
Reaction time is one of the few qualities you can measure to the millisecond in a gym. We take a baseline at assessment and retest it, which turns "feels quicker" into a number that either moved or did not.
Making drills reactive
Most agility work is pre-planned: the athlete knows the pattern before they start. Sport is not like that. Putting a light trigger on a footwork drill removes the rehearsal, so the athlete has to see, decide, and then move — which is what actually happens in a game.
Adding decisions
Pods can be assigned colours and rules, so the athlete is not just reacting but choosing: hit this one, ignore that one, hit two in sequence. That is closer to reading a defence than a stopwatch drill is.
Working under fatigue
Decisions get worse when tired, and that is when games are decided. Running reactive drills at the end of a session shows what an athlete's decision-making actually looks like in the fourth quarter.
What it does not do
Being straight about the evidence: athletes get faster at the thing they practise. Reaction-light training reliably improves reaction to lights. Whether that transfers to reading an opposing hitter or a defender's hips is much less clear, and the research on general "neurocognitive" training transferring to sport performance is mixed at best.
So we use BlazePod as a way to make sport-specific drills unpredictable and measurable, not as a standalone brain-training product. If a drill does not look like something that happens in the athlete's sport, the light does not rescue it.
Where it fits
Reaction work goes early in a session, while the athlete is fresh, except when we are deliberately testing fatigue. It combines well with footwork, change of direction, and defensive positioning work, and it is one of the few things in the gym that youth athletes ask to do again.
Book a session
Reaction work is programmed off a physical assessment, which is where the baseline gets set.
